Wedding planning when you're a DIY'er?

The caterer we want to use works with a particular event planning company for the hiring of linens, etc. I am a do-it-yourself'er and so I am planning to make the invitations, have a friend be the MC, etc. But when I called the event planner and realized how many services they provide (organizing the florist and the caterer and the baker, etc to have everything set up by the time you get there) it seemed like the solution to all my worries.

How do event planners charge? If I still don't want to hire a DJ, etc and would rather do a lot myself, can I? Do they get paid as a percentage for every piece that they organize? Or is it a flat rate?

I personally think that you can use the event planning company for the areas you need them and the rest you can do yourself (esp. if you're a DIY girl). The problem with a company that can do everything from A to Z for you is that it'll cost you an arm and leg because of the convinience. Really...that's all it is. Because anyone is capable of putting everything together themselves, but who has the time? Wouldn't we all rather just pay someone to do it all for us and remove that stress from our lives?

I'm getting married at Martin's Crosswinds (which can be all inclusive). But I'm getting my own DJ, providing my own centerpieces (because I want it more personal), invitations, and a few other things. But things like the linen, the food, drinks, the decorations around the room, the stage, the cake...they're providing and it's all included in their price.

Shop around. You might luck out and find something that can actually cost you less than renting/buying each thing seperately.
Reply:You'll need to interview event planners for this info; I would expect there to be variation in what they'll do and what they charge. Be sure to get all in writing. I watch a lot of wedding shows on TV and see charges between $1500 and $3000 but there could be cheaper ones and more expensive ones.
Reply:Hi. The answer to your question is "it depends" . There are some wedding planners who will just be there the day of the wedding.. others' do the whole 9 yards.... just do a little research on the planners in your area and their rates. Also call and ask if they can do.. XYZ only.. chances are if they are new then they'd consider it.
Reply:I believe the charge for the wedding planner is a flat rate but you will probably have to pay the rental fees for the linens and the fees for the flowers and cake all that is separate. The DJ is usually hired separately so that should be your option to have one or not.
Reply:You should ask the planner about her services and fees. you may decide to everything yourself and only let her take care of the part you need her for... but you need to know your options first.

Good luck!
